ATS-friendly resume template checklist (2026)
If humans never see your resume, keywords and formatting both matter. Here is a practical checklist for US applicants — without fake “guaranteed interview” claims.
Formatting rules that usually survive ATS parsing
- Single-column, top-to-bottom flow
- Standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills)
- Contact details in the body (not only in a header/footer text box)
- Standard fonts; no icons, skill bars, or multi-column tables for core content
- File type the employer asked for (often .docx or PDF — follow the posting)
Content habits that help more than fonts
- Mirror language from the job description honestly (no keyword stuffing)
- Lead bullets with strong verbs and measurable outcomes when true
- Tailor the top third of the resume per application
- Track every application (role, date, follow-up) so you are not guessing

Questions, answered
Do ATS systems reject fancy two-column resumes?
Many applicant tracking systems parse single-column, top-to-bottom text more reliably. Complex tables, text boxes, icons, and graphics often scramble fields. Clean formatting does not guarantee interviews.
Word or Google Docs?
Both work if the layout is ATS-friendly. .docx templates that open cleanly in Google Docs are practical for most US job seekers.
No resume or template can guarantee interviews or offers. This is formatting and process guidance, not career counseling.
